In a time where politcal, financial and moral uncertainty are guaranteed and the country is divided, it is important that we keep exercising our right of free speech and creativity. Politics has failed to represent us, so it is time to represent ourselves and that goes beyond facebook statuses and discussions with like minded people. You now have art to make that has a meaning and purpose that belongs to YOUR lifetime so USE it, bleed it, sweat it and let that rumble you feel deep in your stomach erupt onto paper or canvas or stage and force people to see where they went wrong and how to get things right. It is time to move from passive liberalism to progressive liberalism. To put it simply:
MAKE PEOPLE LISTEN.
June 23rd will be forever the day of Us and Them and where politics divides us, art will bring us back together.
This is the first in a series. The Millennials.
What do you do if you have everything?
When you had a perfect upbringing and realised early on that what other people were going through was just not right. When you went to school and saw people getting bullied because their clothes were dirty and worn or they wore a (headscarf) and you got picked up by your parents in your 4 by 4 and went off to piano lessons.
When you get to university and you are told you have a VOICE. You can change things and to use your privilege for good. Fight for equality, March for humanity.
When you immerse yourself in cultures that don’t belong to you as you try and gain an understanding of what it is like to be held accountable for crimes by a select few. You sit in your library and read the stories of the marginalised. You scroll through facebook and share videos about humanity at its worst and stand on a soapbox and preach to the converted.
You scroll through comments of people fighting political incorrectness with a patronising sense of entitlement. You share Kendrick Lamar videos, you #malala, all from your 3 bedroom rent in what once was the real heart of Brixton.
What do you do when you have everything? You embrace cultures that don’t belong to you and think that it is helping when in fact all it does is water them down.
Recognise that people are different, Recognise that you are the problem. Recognise that standing on a picket line is more effective than listening to jazz or watching Girls.
What do you do when you have everything? You don’t take other peoples identities and claim it as “enrichment”, because that is where inequality stems from.
What do you do when you have everything?
You give it all back.
